We all know working in a office can bring about feelings of being trapped inside or even claustrophobia in some instances. When you stare at a computer screen all day it is necessary to have something in the side of your vision in order to reduce retinal fatigue. Bonsai bring about a feelings of serenity, peace, and tranquility in many people. I probably worked in one of the most stressful and dreary offices in the whole country. Which brings me to my story of how a bonsai saved my job.
The job I had at the time required complete focus, perseverance, and determination. Competitive is not the word for this sales position. Every day was a battle in a dying market of direct mail response leads. It was during a time when every professional in the financial world from insurance agent to certified financial planners were signing up for hot online leads, my product was one they had little interest in.I was in a position similar to being down 10 points in the last 2 minutes of a basketball game, produce or loose your job. I have been involved in what I call the living art of bonsai on and off throughout my life, at this time I found it to be very therapeutic. A few of my co-workers asked me if I could make them bonsai trees, so I started bringing them in to the office. In a matter of weeks my previously boring cubical was filled with impressive though fairly young trees. Suddenly my sales turned around, it was like day and night. This resulted in a sales streak which gave me respect and a strong footing in the company. I firmly believe these trees saved my job.
I welcome anyone to share their comments and experience on which trees they had in the office and how it brightened up the space. What did having a bonsai on your desk do for your performance or mood?
